Sport Clubs are student organizations created by students and run by students. Sport Clubs can be competitive, practice and travel or they can be instructional. Have you loved playing a sport all your life and don’t want to give it up? Have you always wanted to learn a new activity? Then Sport Clubs is where you need to be! Who’s eligible to participate in Sport Clubs?
|All current University of South Carolina-Columbia students, faculty & staff. What is the difference between clubs and intramurals?
Sport Clubs usually take more investment and commitment than Intramural Sports. While intramural league teams will play about once a week for only one hour at a time, clubs will practice, on average, 2-3 times per week for 2 hours each practice.
Depending on the club, the financial investment can be greater as well. Most clubs have dues that are around $50/semester with many personal costs coming throughout the semester. Some clubs cost upwards of $500 to $1000 a year with fewer personal costs throughout the year.
Sport Clubs will travel to other schools to play and have other schools come here to play. Intramural teams only play against other University of South Carolina intramural teams.
Finally, a large component of Sport Clubs is the presence of an instructional element. Students participating in sport clubs should be receiving coaching and instruction to improve their skills within their sport. Intramurals does not provide or require this element.
How do I contact a club that I am interested in?
All active clubs can be found on Garnet Gate.
When do tryouts happen?
Most tryouts occur within the first couple weeks of fall semester, however, it changes with each club. Your best bet is to get into contact with clubs about one week before classes start or within the first week of classes.
**A waiver must be submitted prior to participating in any try-out, practice or meeting.**
