Outdoor Recreation Equipment Rental
The Equipment rental Program allows students, faculty and staff the opportunity to rent outdoor equipment at minimal costs. The equipment will accommodate the basic needs to do many outdoor activities. Equipment includes tents, backpacks, lanterns, stoves, cook sets, headlamps, sleeping bags & pads, canoes, car-top carriers, and many other items. Patrons will also have access to the Outdoor Recreation Resource area where they can find information on where to go hiking, canoeing and kayaking.
 
Reservations
  • Equipment is only rented to USC-Columbia students, faculty and staff
  • Equipment can be reserved up to 2 weeks prior to desired date
  • Reservations must be made in person during operational hours
  • A valid USC-Columbia ID is required
  • All rental fees must be paid at the time of the reservation, via cash, check, or CarolinaCard. Checks should be made payable to USC.
  • Outdoor Recreation reserves the right to limit the amount of equipment reserved and to deny reserved equipment to any individual.
  • Renters are responsible for all equipment rented under their name
 
Equipment Check-Out

The renter must be the person who checks out the equipment and he/she must present a valid USC-Columbia ID card. No exceptions will be made.

Please allow yourself enough time (10-15 minutes) to have the equipment thoroughly checked out by the Outdoor Recreation staff and complete the necessary paperwork. The renter is responsible for checking the equipment before they leave for their trip. Once the equipment leaves the Outdoor Recreation office, it's the sole responsibility of the renter to take care of the equipment. The courteous outdoor staff employees are ready and willing to demonstrate how to use the equipment.

The staff will be glad to help assist you tie down any watercraft to your vehicle, but we take no responsibility for any damage that occurs during loading, unloading, or transportation of the craft.

 
Equipment Check-In

Rental rates are charged by the day, weekend (2-4 days), or the week (5-7 days).

Weekend rates begin on Thursday and end of Monday. Weekend rates may be extended to include weekly holiday periods. Equipment returned late will be assigned the per day rental rate for each day it is late. if you can't make it back in time, please call to arrange alternate plans (576-9397).

*Propane, butane, and mantles are not provided, but propane for the Bluet 270 may be purchased at Adventure Carolina or The Backpacker. Propane and mantles for the Coleman stoves and lanterns may be purchased at K-Mart, Wal-Mart, or Ace Hardware.

 
Refunds
No refunds will be given for unused equipment, which is not picked up or was not cancelled more than 24 hours in advance. If you cancel between 24-48 hours in advance, you will get a %50 refund and any cancellations 48 hours or more in advance will receive a full refund.
 
Additional Fees
Late: The Office of Campus Recreation reserves the right to charge a late fee equal to the per day rental rate for each day it is late or $5.00 per day, whichever is greater.
Wet/Dirty: The will be a $10.00 cleaning charge if the equipment is returned dirty or wet.
Lost/Stolen: Lost and stolen equipment must be replaced and paid for by the renter at the designated replacement cost.
Damaged: Damaged equipment must be repaired if such repairs can restore the equipment to its normal use and safety standards. The Outdoor Recreation staff member will assess repair charges.
 
Equipment Treatment

Please, dry and clean any equipment (especially tents and sleeping bags) immediately after use to ensure that mildew will not set into the equipment causing damage to the equipment.

Ensure that all stoves and cook sets are cleaned. This will ensure that no grease or dirt will start damaging the equipment and its surface material.

We would advise you not to set up a tent, pack, or sleeping equipment on, next to, or near extreme heat, fire or smoking objects because of possible burn damage to that equipment.

Outdoor Recreation equipment rental is provided as a service for the sole use and enjoyment of students, faculty, and staff of the University of South Carolina, and you are using the equipment in an "as is" condition at your own initiative, risk, and responsibility. It is recommended that you test all equipment to ensure that it is working properly before embarking on your trip.
